Relighting Sylvia
28 de Junio del 2010Inspired by the research of Paul Debevec on photographic relighting, I’ve created this Flash experiment showing a real-time relighted scene of my girlfriend with her netbook. Watch it here. Please note it requires a fast computer to run at full framerate.
The scene has been captured without any special hardware, just a common reflex camera (Nikon D70) with its remote, a tripod and the netbook as the only light source. The time for shooting all the photos required for the relighting process was about 3-4 minutes, where Silvia — the Spanish for Sylvia — stayed amazingly static for the purpose.
I’ve really enjoyed the development of this experiment because it mixes the most of my hobbies: photography, art, coding, technology, and also it has been a great opportunity to involve my girlfriend in any of my experiments.
WOW!! really nice!! I love it!!!! :OO I’m wondering how it is made.. hand painted normalmap…
great!!! sure it was a lot of fun to do! :)
Diego: no; it is digital relighting. Lots of photos are taken with different lighting positions to finally combine everything digitally.
Since the nature of light is additive, and the relighting adds different photos, the result of the relighting is photographical quality too. Visit the link to Paul Debevec for more information.
Gran Trabajo!
hi Roman,
What technique did you use to capture the normal mapping data? My technique uses 6 axis-aligned different light sources all with a fixes position camera.
Your shot is beautiful and clever to be facing a computer screen. I have this technique saved from when I did a similar thing in games using a lighting rig in 3Studios to generate images of game models for a Gameboy demo I did with real-time lighting.
Would love a writeup, I want to make a really easy to follow tutorial for doing this including explanations of why it works explaining how each channel combines into valid normals. Of course also explaining how to render it as well. Also I used a technique for speeding it up which I assume you are using to get real time results.

Great stuff!
A friend suggested so I tried it on Android device to see how slow the 10.1 player there is….

I already told you on the phone earlier, this is some amazing stuff! Not just the tech itself, you also wrapped this up very nicely!
Fantastic, do yuo thing that´s could be done with a simple Programming?
Por un momento pensé que se trataba de CSS
Amazing work as always, will try it out too!
